Read, Kids, Read

Saw that another ZA posted this on her page earlier and wanted to share with everyone. It really is a great article.

Columnist Frank Bruni offers some sad new research on children’s reading habits and makes the case for improving these numbers.

As he points out from scientific research, “reading and intelligence have a relationship so close as to be symbiotic.”

Any ideas on how we can get our children reading more?

Curiosity and Learning

This is a great op-ed about curiosity!

It centers around Michael Lewis’ new book, but talks about the intrinsic desire that some people have to ‘figure it out’. (And in this case, that desire trumps the desire for monetary success).

I think a lot of what makes a good ZA is the desire to ‘figure it out;’. Do you all agree??

Learningz, January 28

Yesterday’s post had a great collection of at-home workouts. Now, for some motivation to step away from your computer and do those!

Scientists have published findings on how inactivity can change our neural complexion (for the worse) and also lead to heightened risks of heart disease.

“Dr. Mueller said, he plans to show slides of the different rat neurons and, echoing the old anti-drug message, point out that “‘this is your brain.’ And this is your brain on the couch.”
