They found the Santa Maria

History buffs woke up to some AMAZING news this morning — researchers think they’ve identified the ruin of Christopher Columbus’ flagship the Santa Maria!

You’ll probably remember the Santa Maria from your US History textbooks (along with the Nina and the Pinta!) — and this is some serious history geekdom here.

How cool??

I’m sure everyone has seen the announcements and posts about Zirtual’s new “open” model and website.

So, we’ll do something else for Learningz.

Yesterday we celebrated the life of an important man in human history, Martin Luther King, Jr.

Here’s a great article on MLK’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech”. good ready for historians!!

Learningz, December 6

On December 5th, the world lost a powerful, heroic and inspiring man.

There are so many sites/places/articles on Nelson Mandela to share and ready, I thought I’d keep it simple here for Learningz.

“Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world”

His legacy will live on and we’ll continue to draw inspiration from the life he led. For now, perhaps we just feel grateful for what he gave to our time in history.

Will Durant on Civilization

Cranberry_River_West_Virginia

“Civilization is a stream with banks. The stream is sometimes filled with blood from people killing, stealing, shouting and doing the things historians usually record, while on the banks, unnoticed, people build homes, make love, raise children, sing songs, write poetry and even whittle statues. The story of civilization is the story of what happened on the banks. Historians are pessimists because they ignore the banks for the river.” — Will Durant,Life, Oct. 18, 1963
